About Us
After a twenty year hiatus from Lafayette, the tasty treats offered by Southside Bakery returned to the Hub City market in 2003. In no time, the word was out, and before long old customers and new were enjoying treats from the family-run shop at the corner of Johnston Street at South College.
It was shortly after the conclusion of World War II that founders Russell and Edith Guilbeaux opened what was once called the Dixie Cream Donut Shop. The Guilbeaux’s later relocated to Johnston Street after winning a fried pie contract in the 1950's and expanded their operation.
In the late 1970's, son Sammy bought the bakery from his father, and ran the bakery with his wife Gerry for ten years. Sammy closed the bakery in 1987 due to illness.
Today, Southside Bakery continues to be a family operated business, with identical twin sons Denny and Billy, now carrying the family standard of providing only the highest quality products. They have expanded their menu to include hamburgers, sandwiches and salads.
The meals at Southside are more than memorable, they’re the kind you tell all of your friends about because they’re so good!
Denny works behind the scenes as head baker, while Billy works out front welcoming old and new customers daily. Sisters Tammie, Samara and Penny each have their own unique specialities, all of which makes Southside the family run success that it is. Mom Gerry Guilbeaux, dedicated role model and self taught cake decorator, has transformed her skill into an art.
At this truly family run business where even ninety-three year old Grandmother Edith appears from time to time to fold cake boxes, three generations of Guilbeaux’s can be seen creating delicacies to tempt the palate and warm the heart. Stop in at Southside Bakery for breakfast, lunch or just to treat yourself to the savory and delicious creations that this gifted family offers for your taste buds. |
